TITLE OF POSITION:  Head Softball Coach


The Head Softball Coach is responsible for managing all aspects of the University of Montana’s NCAA Division I FCS Intercollegiate Softball Team, a member of the Big Sky Conference.

The University of Montana is seeking a Head Coach for its NCAA Division I Women’s Softball Program.

Montana sponsors 15 sports at the NCAA Division I level.  All sports compete in the Big Sky Conference, a nationally prominent Division I FCS conference.

Women’s programs include: basketball, volleyball, soccer, softball, cross country, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis, and golf.

Men’s programs include: football, basketball, cross country, tennis, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field.

Montana seeks a head women’s softball coach, with responsibilities, abilities, and qualifications as follows:


  1. Promote an atmosphere for compliance within the program supervised by the coach and to monitor the activities regarding compliance of all assistant coaches and other administrators involved with the program who report directly or indirectly to the coach (NCAA Bylaw
  2. Share as appropriate with assistant coaches and other sports staff information presented at monthly head coaches meetings.
  3. Plan and implement a sound pre-season training program in coordination with the strength and conditioning staff.
  4. Plan for all team practices to maximize time, effort, safety and skill.
  5. Develop a balanced and challenging competition schedule.
  6. Monitor and encourage the academic progress of student-athletes, culminating in their graduation.
  7. Provide for the safety and welfare of team members at all times.
  8. Work with the athletic trainers to assure all team members have had physical exams and their athletic training needs have been met.
  9. Prepare yearly team budget and equipment requests in conjunction with appropriate staff.
  10. Recruit and retain outstanding athletes to UM program who can be academically successful.
  11. Promote the team, program, and University in a professional manner at all times, while promoting positive and productive working relationships with other staff members.
  12. Do an appropriate amount of public relations, recruiting, and development work.
  13. Deal effectively with the various public and booster groups to promote the respective sports program.
  14. Athletic Department employees and those University employees outside the Athletic Department with NCAA rules compliance responsibilities are subject at all times to NCAA Bylaws 10.1 and 11.1 regarding ethical conduct and the responsibility to positively contribute to a campus culture of NCAA rules compliance. Failure to conduct oneself as such will result in disciplinary or corrective action up to and including immediate discharge.


  • Coaching experience at the Division I level
  • Head coaching experience
  • Experience recruiting in the Northwest


  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum of 4 years collegiate softball coaching experience
  • Proven ability to recruit high quality student-athletes
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills
  • Knowledge and experience with NCAA rules and regulations
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of people
  • Strong organizational skills
